Half Marathon & La Jolla Shores 5k
The La Jolla Half Marathon is one of America’s most picturesque and beautiful point-to-point races. Starting at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the course follows a scenic coastal route before reaching the challenging climb to the summit of Torrey Pines State Park. After leaving the park, the course rolls atop Torrey Pines mesa, continues down through the residential district of La Jolla Shores, and finishes in Ellen Browning Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove. The La Jolla Shores 5K offers a mostly downhill course and features some of the most scenic views of the last 3.1 miles of the half marathon course.

Junior Olympics
A highlight of the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla’s year is the Richard “Moon” Mullen Memorial La Jolla Junior Olympics. Held in the month of May at La Jolla High School, the first La Jolla Junior Olympics took place in 1992 during Moon’s tenure as club president. The junior Olympics is staffed by over 100 volunteers including members of the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla, UCSD Circle K Club, La Jolla High School Key Club, University City High School Key Club, Mission Bay High School Key Club along with staff from the La Jolla YMCA. A large contingent of U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar share their enthusiasm and offer support for the elementary school athletes.

Pancake Breakfast
Since 1963 the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla has organized as summer morning breakfast featuring pancakes with various toppings, sausages, and beverages. Held at the La Jolla Recreation Center the event is an opportunity for friends and family to gather for pancakes and fun. Music, pony rides, bounce house and face painting help to create a festive atmosphere. Items that are donated by local businesses, hotels and restaurants are raffled and auctioned off, raising monies that the club’s foundation grants to non-profit organizations.

Concerts by the Sea
The La Jolla Kiwanis Concerts by the Sea has been an annual community summer tradition since 1984. These free Sunday afternoon concerts are held at the Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove, one of California’s most beautiful outdoor venues, and showcase some of the best Southern California and San Diego bands. Whether listening or dancing, these family friendly concerts make Sundays in the park the place to be!

Cove Swim
For over 100 years the La Jolla Cove Swim has been one the world’s most renowned open water swims, attracting experienced swimmers from across the country as well as internationally. The one and three-mile courses of the Swim start and finish at the picturesque La Jolla Cove. In 2020 the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla took over the leadership of the Swim and the event was renamed. Due to COVID 19, the 2020 La Jolla Kiwanis Cove Swim was a virtual event with the proceeds directed to organizations that supported unemployed workers during the pandemic.
